DETAILS

COST

Rent subsidies for roommate(s): The Regional Center subsidizes the rent for clients, but does not provide subsidies for the portion of the rent allocated to roommates. In many cases, roommates are essential to provide assistance to persons with developmental disabilites that need to live independently. Also, with today's high rents, living in a home or apartment is impossible without roommates to share the cost.

$20 ,000

Staff training, conferences, CPR training for Executive Director, security checks for new staff, safety inspections of staff vehicles: Participating in training and attending conferences are essential for maintaining staff competence. Safety checks and safety inspections are required for the protection of clients. Quality programming depends on the provision of these activities and services, but CHOICESS Regional contracts do not cover the full cost. An additional $300 per staff member is needed each year.

$30 ,000

Computer Access: All CHOICESS clients are actively involved in making their own choices and expressing their preferences in how to reach their goals/outcomes. Once objectives are set, progress is usually assessed in the client's home or workplace through the Individual Service Plan reporting process. Currently staff members note the progress in the field and then must return to the administrative office to record the information on a computer. This is very time consuming and can lead to errors that would be avoided if the five coordinators had laptop computers.

$10 ,000

Future Goal: At some point, CHOICESS would like to establish a separate non-profit organization to develop funding and funding strategies to help persons with developmental disabilities to purchase their own homes. The mission of that organization would not be to provide assisted living service, therefore the requisite interests and expertise of its Board members and staff would be different. It is anticipated that Board members would be recruited from the real estate and finance industries and staff would be selected for their familiarity with housing and home financing. The new organization would serve CHOICESS assisted living clients as well as other persons with developmental disabilities needing assistance in purchasing a home of their own.
