Support equipment (motorized wheelchairs, modified computers, etc.): A major goal of the CHOICESS Program is to help clients obtain and keep profitable jobs. There are many job opportunities for the developmentally disabled in the Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties if the client has the right support equipment. It can take as long as five years for a qualified individual to obtain a publicly funded motorized wheelchair and there is little or no support for the modified computers many clients need.

Medical/hygiene supplies and/or medications not covered by Medi-Cal: Hygiene supplies to assist individuals in personal care are costly and necessary and must be purchased by the clients. Also, Medi-Cal does not pay for many procedures and medications that would greatly enhance the physical and mental well being of people with disabilities. For example, a dentist may opt to pull a tooth rather then perform a root canal or filling on a perfectly good tooth because Medi-Cal will not cover that procedure.

Initial rent subsidies and furnishings to get clients into apartments: It is often necessary for CHOICESS to provide “up-front” funding for rent and furnishings to enable an individual to move into his/her home of choice. Funding from the Regional Center is sometimes slow in coming and frequently does not cover the entire “up-front” costs.

Vacations and recreational activities: Enjoyable use of leisure time is highly prized by CHOICESS clients and is usually one of the outcomes in their ISP. Helping them budget for the cost of these activities is one part of their program. Often there just isn’t enough money left over each month. In some cases a client must be accompanied by paid staff and budgeting for the additional (non-salary) cost for the staff member makes vacations or recreational activities impossible. The cost of supplementing what the client can afford is approximately $500 a year per client.

$25, 000

Educational and conference funding: Although CHOICESS utilizes generic grants/scholarships when applicable some individuals can not afford the additional costs of purchasing books, paying for parking/transportation, etc. in order to attend educational courses at local community colleges or adult schools. A number of conferences also take place across the state and nationally that would provide individuals the opportunity to increase their knowledge, meet new people, gain information about other available resources, and job opportunities. The regional centers rarely cover the cost of registration and never provide for the other expenses such as travel, accommodations, meals, and staff support. School costs are approximately $100 per semester and the typical cost of attending a conference is $550.00 per person.
